Philippines vs. Nepal
Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila
28th March 2017
Nepal is set to play against the Philippines on March 28, 2017, as both the teams aspire to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup 2019.
Nepal will compete against the likes of Tajikistan, Philippines and Yemen in group F as the South Asian country looks to take their winning momentum forward.
After a massive corruption scandal within Nepalese football, it is finally starting to hit some pace with a three-game winning run.
Even Nepalese former captain Sagar Thapa lost his place in the side and his captaincy after the scandal. The country enprisoned the defender after accusations of match fixing from the country’s Authority Abuse Investigation commission.
But the mountainous country has a bad record against their opponents, with three defeats in four head to head games. The home side lost to Nepal in 1982 in the Kings Cup.
Nepal didn’t pick one of their promising midfield players Hemant Thapa Magar for the game. The midfielder was once even touted to become Nepal’s midfield maestro but has struggled to find form lately.
Nepal’s final squad:
Goalkeepers: Bikesh Kuthu, Kiran Chemjong, Bishal Shrestha
Defenders: Rabin Shrestha, Biraj Maharjan, Ananta Tamang, Aditya Chaudhary, Kamal Shrestha, Ranjit Dhimal, Jitendra Karki,
Midfielders: Rohit Chand, Bishal Rai, Heman Gurung, Bikram Lama, Anjan Bista, Sujal Shrestha
Forwards: Bimal Gharti Magar, Bharat Khawas, Ranjan Bista, Karna Limbu
Meanwhile, Philippines are also playing Malaysia in a friendly match on 22 March as a warmup ahead of the big clash against Nepal.
Nepal is currently ranked 170th in the FIFA rankings. Their opponents Philippines, however, are ahead of them as a 124th ranked team in the world.
